The San Quirico Brewery is located in an ancient medieval building
in the historic centre of San Quirico d’Orcia (Siena), right
along the route of the via Francigena. An extremely beautiful location
intended as a resting spot for the pilgrims who passed through here.
In San Quirico the via Francigena actually passed through the centre
of the town, and for centuries the main street flourished with a rich
activity of amenities for the pilgrims such as hotels (hospitium),
hospitals (hospitals), eateries and drinking taverns.
Featuring in documentation as early as the end of the 9th century,
the via Francigena became enormously important at the start of the
second Millennium when thriving spirituality saw the increase of pilgrimages
to the three important sites of Christianity: Rome, Jerusalem and Santiago
de Compostela. The via Francigena, being the most important medieval
pilgrimage route, was travelled by crowds of pilgrims from all across
Europe, heading south towards Rome and Jerusalem, and north to Santiago
de Compostela, and stopping for certain along the route at San Quirico. |
